First-Timers Guide to an MBT Event

Everything You Need to Know Without the Overwhelm

If this is your first baseball tournament weekend with MBT, let’s start here:

👋🏼 Welcome! We're so happy that you're here!
📖 You are not missing some secret rulebook.
💯 And you are absolutely going to have a great time.

At McKeesport Baseball Tournaments, we host a lot of first-time tournament families every season. Most arrive with the same questions and worries, and most leave wondering why they were nervous in the first place.

Here’s what helps.

What to Bring (and What You Can Skip)

You don’t need to pack like you’re moving in for the weekend, but a few basics make things easier.

Helpful items:

  • Folding chairs or a blanket
  • Sunscreen and hats
  • Refillable water bottles
  • Small snacks for between games
  • A phone charger or battery pack

Nice to remember:

  • Layers for changing weather
  • Something to keep younger siblings busy

What you can skip:

  • Overthinking it
  • Matching team-parent outfits
  • Carrying everything at once

If you forget something, you won’t be the first, and you won’t be alone.

How Tournament Schedules Work

Tournament schedules can all be found in the Sports Engine Tourney App and can be downloaded to any iOS or Android device.

Your Quick Guide to the SportsEngine Tourney App

A tiny side quest that pays off all weekend.

For all McKeesport Baseball Tournaments events, we use the SportsEngine Tourney app by SportsEngine. It’s the easiest way to stay in the loop without refreshing your email or chasing down a schedule printout.

How to Download

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).

  2. Search “SportsEngine Tourney.”

  3. Download the app (it’s free).

How to Use It

Open the app and search for MCKEESPORT.

Favorite your team to pin their games front and center.

Check game times, field locations, standings, and brackets all in one place.

Turn on notifications so you’re alerted if anything changes.

Why We Recommend It

Real-time updates: Schedule tweaks, field changes, and bracket movement show up fast.

One source of truth: No guessing, no screenshots from group chats.

Less stress: You’ll know where to be and when, without overthinking it.

Mobile-friendly: Everything you need, right in your pocket.

Bottom line: Downloading the SportsEngine Tourney app is a small step that makes your tournament weekend smoother, calmer, and way more enjoyable. Future-you, sitting comfortably in a folding chair, will approve. 📱⚾

Most weekends include:

  • Scheduled pool play games
  • Built-in breaks between games
  • Bracket play later in the weekend

Start times matter, but everything doesn’t happen at once. There’s time to eat, rest, watch other games, and regroup. If you’re ever unsure where to be next, ask. Tournament staff and other parents are always happy to help.

Food, Weather, and Downtime

Tournament weekends are a mix of activity and waiting, and that’s normal.

You’ll find:

  • Concessions available at The Home Plate Snack Bar & Grill between fields 1 and 2
  • Space to relax or explore in Renzie Park between games
  • Music and energy throughout the park

Weather happens. Games may pause or adjust. That doesn’t mean something is wrong. It’s all part of outdoor sports, and we plan for it.

Downtime is when kids recharge and families catch their breath. Let it be part of the experience, not a problem to solve.

How to Support Your Player Well

This might be the most important part.

Your player doesn’t need:

  • A post-game analysis
  • A recap of every mistake
  • Pressure to perform

They do need:

  • Encouragement
  • Calm energy
  • A reminder that baseball is supposed to be fun

Sometimes the best support is a Gatorade, a hug, and a simple, “I love watching you play.”

What Not to Stress About

Let’s make this easy.

Don’t stress about:

  • Being new
  • Asking questions
  • Not knowing tournament etiquette
  • Other families who seem experienced

Everyone was new once. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s participation, growth, and enjoyment.

If your child feels supported and safe, you’re doing it right.

You Belong Here

Tournament weekends are meant to feel welcoming, exciting, and manageable, even if it’s your first one. MBT families look out for each other, and that community starts the moment you arrive.
