The Legacy of SLUGFEST:
How Officer Sean “Slug” Sluganski Continues to Impact the McKeesport Community
and Is Now the Legend He Always Thought He Would Be
Sean’s Legacy is of Vibrant Joy
Since April of 2023, youth baseball communities of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio have gathered in McKeesport’s Renzie Park for an event that transcends sports. MBT’s Annual Memorial SLUGFEST isn’t just another tournament - it’s a celebration of one man’s vibrant life, his unthinkable sacrifice, and his dedication to the McKeesport community. At the core of SLUGFEST is the enduring legacy of McKeesport Police Officer Sean “Slug” Sluganski, whose dedication and service continue to inspire, two years after his watch ended.
Sean’s Legacy is of Unwavering Commitment
Police Officer Sean Sluganski, affectionately known by many as “Slug,” served McKeesport with unwavering commitment. Tragically, his life was cut short while protecting the community and the fellow officers he loved. To honor his memory and keep his spirit alive, SLUGFEST was born. This unique tournament is not only a tribute to Sean but also a meaningful way to give back to the community he cherished.
Sean’s Legacy is of Enjoying the Moments
SLUGFEST is more than just baseball games in Renzie Park. It’s an immersive experience that brings players, families, and fans together to create and cherish their own memories. Highlights include team photo opportunities, MVP medals, energetic announcers, and the iconic original BIGGEST TEAM CHAMP TROPHY in the Mon Valley. From food trucks and concessions to raffles and tournament apparel, every detail is designed to create lasting memories while supporting an important cause - in honor of Sean.
Sean’s Legacy is of Supporting the Future of Public Safety
Proceeds from this event will again benefit the McKeesport Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund, established in Sean’s memory. This fund provides financial support to McKeesport-area students pursuing careers in public safety, ensuring that Sean’s passion for protecting others lives on through the next generation.
Congrats to the 2024 recipient, Abigail Weiss, pursuing a career as a National Park Ranger to protect our most precious natural resources and have opportunities to educate about wildlife and forest conservation. She was presented with her scholarship during K-9 Classic* Kick-Off events last year.
*Sean’s legacy also includes an adoring love for animals. He was next up to bond with yet another dog and train to be a K-9 handler with the McKeesport K-9 Unit, one of McKeesport Baseball Tournament's closest partners.
Sean’s Legacy is of Sportsmanship and Camaraderie
SLUGFEST invites teams of all skill levels to participate, emphasizing camaraderie and community over competition. It’s a chance to unite for a greater purpose: remembering a hero and shaping the future of public safety.
Sean’s Legacy is of So Many Important Things
Sean Sluganski’s legacy is one of service, sacrifice, and love for McKeesport. Through SLUGFEST, his impact continues to resonate, reminding us all of the power of community and the importance of giving back.
