Are We Even Ready For Travel Baseball?
🚨 Spoiler Alert: You Probably Are
If you’ve found yourself staring at a tournament flyer, hovering over the registration button, or quietly asking another coach, “Do you think we’re ready for this?” - you’re not alone.
That question shows up every season, especially for coaches and families of young teams. Whether you’re coaching 7U, 8U, or just transitioning out of rec ball, it’s normal to wonder if your group of wide-eyed, snack-driven players is “ready” to step into the world of travel baseball.
👍🏻 Here’s the thing: readiness doesn’t always look the way we think it does.
🤔 What We Think “Ready” Means
Many teams hold back from joining tournaments because they assume “ready” means:
- Winning most of your games in rec ball
- Practicing several times a week with perfect attendance
- Having matching uniforms, matching bat bags, and a parent with a radar gun
- Knowing all the rules, signs, and lingo of travel baseball
- Playing flawless, textbook baseball
Sure, that might be what some teams look like. But if that’s our bar for “ready,” most of us would never get started.
😁 What “Ready” Actually Means
In reality, being ready for your first travel tournament looks more like this:
- Your players can mostly stay on the field and follow the game
- You’ve got at least one adult keeping everyone (somewhat) organized
- Your team is excited to try something new - even if they’re a little nervous
- You’re prepared to treat the experience as a learning opportunity
- You want to build your team’s confidence, not just their record
👍🏻 That’s it. That’s the real readiness test.
💯 The Best Time to Start Is Before You Feel 100% Prepared
Tournaments designed for younger divisions (like 7U and 8U) know exactly who they’re serving. These events are meant to welcome developing teams - not weed them out. The schedules are more relaxed, the rules are slightly simplified, and the environment is built to be fun and wholesome.
Waiting until everything is perfect means missing out on the growth that comes from real experience. And at this age, experience is everything.
🏁 Your First Tournament Isn’t the Finish Line - It’s the Starting Point
Your first travel tournament isn’t about chasing championships. It’s about:
- Building trust and teamwork
- Learning how to handle a strikeout or a tough call
- Hearing your name announced over the speaker as you come up to bat
- Sitting in the dugout with your teammates
- Dancing in the field while warming up between innings
- Making memories that outlast the score
If your players are smiling, trying hard, and starting to love the game, then yes - your team is ready.
So go ahead. Sign up. Show up. Learn as you go.
⚾️ You won’t regret starting.
